Meet Mahmoud Abbas

There's no bigger whiner in the Middle East than Mahmoud Abbas, the so-called moderate leader of the Palestinian Authority whose nickname should surely be Doctor No. Last year, he turned down an extraordinarily generous offer from a desperate Ehud Olmert to end the conflict and give his Palestinian people their own state. This year, he is hiding behind an obstacle he never brought up before-- a complete construction freeze in all settlements and East Jerusalem-- and sticking it to the Americans even after they softened their demand. Now he is threatening to walk away, and complaining, as you can see in this piece in The Jerusalem Post, that "Israel doesn't want peace."
Israel does not want peace, does not want to stop settlement construction and does not want the two-state solution, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Sunday.
Addressing supporters during a rare visit to Bethlehem and Hebron, Abbas said that the Palestinians would not make any additional concessions and would continue to demand their rights.
"I don't know what the Israelis want," he said. "They must start thinking about what needs to be done if they really want peace."
